INTRODUCTION

CHINA ARTS COLLEGE is an independent private education institute. We are internationally recognized as such. We offer BTA and MTA degrees, as well as TPhD and postgraduate level courses and programs. Our courses combine Chinese traditions and modern science. Our degrees are designated ‘Bachelor of Taoist Arts (BTA)’, ‘Master of Taoist Arts (MTA)’ and ‘Doctor of Taoist Philosophy and Arts (TPhD)’.

At the time of writing we are the only institute at university level in Europe offering highly specialized practical education in these fields of study. We are the only institute in the world offering these degrees.

Bachelor degree: at least three years of study. The student aims at widening his/her view of traditional Chinese Culture and/or Fine Arts, Taoist Alchemy and/or Taoist Authentic Medicine and obtaining a thorough knowledge. Bachelors must be able to teach fundamental courses on the subjects they have studied and provide the public with correct information. If they specialize in Taoist Authentic Medicine they must be able to practice basic Taoist Healing.

Master degree: for a Bachelor wishing to pursue further education and specialization. It takes at least two years to obtain the degree. Candidates choose a specialization (Taoist Authentic Medicine/Taoist Internal Alchemy), but also get opportunities to continue studying Fine Arts, Internal Martial Arts, and Chinese Cultural Research. Masters are highly qualified specialists in their field of studies and have a vast knowledge of Chinese culture and are able to provide accurate advice. They are also able to teach fundamental and specialized courses. Masters specialized in Taoist Authentic Medicine are able to practice Taoist Therapies.

A list of qualified Bachelors and Masters of Taoist Arts is available at the registrar's office.

EXAMS

Only regular students are allowed to participate in the exams. Irregular students do not need to pass exams.

Admission exam: candidates for regular student status (Bachelor and Master) should pass the admission exam before registering as students (students in possession of a regular China Arts BTA diploma do not need to pass this exam). It consists of a short written and oral/practical exam about motivation and capacities. The staff informs the candidate about the sort of questions to be expected. If the student passes the test, he/she can register for the regular student status.

Exams: you can only take exams during the two exam periods (June-July/September); only courses taught during the year are eligible for exams [exact date and schedules to be agreed upon with the professors]. Succeeding in the exams means you obtain credits for the final exams and diploma. For some courses the student is required to write 1 or more papers. Some of these qualify as exams.

Exam fees consist of

- registration fee per academic year and per period

- professor's honorarium

Contact us for details about the fees for the exams and the admission exam.

The candidates should register for the exams at the registrar's office before the start of the examination period. The professor(s) and/or tutor(s) will advise the student on the choice of subjects/courses.

The candidate receives a result form after the exam period. General results are made public at the Proclamation Ceremony. Diploma's are presented at this ceremony.

SUBJECTS AND COURSES

We teach a vast array of courses throughout the year and there are also special seminars, Summer Schools, etc. All of these college subjects can be used to collect study points and credits (after passing the exams).

The Bachelor curriculum can be found here. The Master and PhD/postgraduate curriculums are highly individualized and therefore will be discussed with the candidates before the beginning of the new academic year. The subjects are taught via private tuition and master classes with a limited number of students. The professors and students discuss practical issues (subjects, time, tuition fee, etc.) before the start of the academic year. A list of possible subjects can be found on this web site and here.

BACHELOR OF TAOIST ARTS DEGREE CONDITIONS

It takes at least three years before the candidate can take the final Bachelor of Taoist Arts exams. The student selects her/his subjects from the curriculum. When in doubt about your choice, ask the staff for advice.

Each year the candidate collects a minimum of 60 study points. These points can be obtained by actively participating in the courses and writing papers (10 study points/paper; papers are normally limited to 1 or 2/year). The subjects of the papers are decided upon by the professors. Candidates should take into account that a good deal of self study will be necessary.

At the end of each academic year (June - September) the student participates in the exams. Succeeding in the exams provides the student with credits for the final exams (after min. 3 years). After passing all exams and successfully finishing a dissertation (to be agreed upon by the promoter) the new Bachelor receives an English and a Chinese diploma. Bachelors can obtain permission to teach and/or practice Taoist Healing.

The final dissertation is a scientific thesis or a practical assignment and a written report. The candidate may chose her/his subject but should have her/his professor's consent. This professor will assist the student as promoter and meet with the student regularly in private sessions for follow-ups. The dissertation should be defended during the exam period (June - September) of the year in which it was finished and presented.

MASTER OF TAOIST ARTS DEGREE CONDITIONS

The study program takes at least two years. The student selects her/his specialization (Taoist Authentic Medicine/Taoist Internal Alchemy) and discusses how to realize her/his goal with the staff. The curriculum consists of master classes, self study, papers, practical assignments, private sessions and preparing a scientific dissertation. The individualized program is discussed before starting the program.

DOCTOR OF TAOIST ARTS AND POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

Masters can start a research program to obtain the doctor's degree (TPhD). A Master may obtain the PhD degree after at least two years of research. The promoter meets regularly with her/his students in private sessions to follow up the progress. The candidate should present and successfully defend a scientific dissertation containing original and revolutionary material and theses before a scientific committee. The members of the committee will be selected by China Arts College on basis of their academic record (PhD level) and qualifications in the field of Taoist Studies/Anthropology/Sinology. The thesis should be a worthy contribution in the field of Chinese cultural studies and clearly show the candidate's capacities. We can provide individualized programs for Masters and Doctors belonging to/having studied at other universities.
