The Belgian Taoist Association (BETA) was established in 1990 in order to provide
a safe haven for those who wanted to pursue a respectful practice and serious study
of Taoism in general and Taoist alchemy in particular. We are the source of information
and advice for people that are interested in Taoism, its philosophy and practices.
From the beginning our initiative was highly appreciated and supported by Chinese
Taoist Associations, Chinese scientific institutes for the research of Taoism and
Chinese authorities.
We underline that Taoism can be practiced alongside other religions and atheism.
Taoism as such is no ordinary religion or belief. It certainly is not a religion
in the sense of the Mediterranean type of religions. It is a harmonious, natural
and peaceful way of life. It has always integrated other philosophic and religious
elements and will continue to do so. Taoism does not work against other ‘ways’, it
does not fight other beliefs, it does not ‘spread the word’. It lies waiting for
those who feel attracted to it. It looks for individual and relative ‘truth’ not
absolute ‘truth’.
We focus on authenticity and sincerity in our study of Chinese (Taoist) culture and
art and welcome any individual or group with similar aspirations.
We also want to make clear that there are many persons that abuse the name ‘dao’
and ‘Taoist’ to confuse the public and gain profit from this. We do not support such
practices. Rest assured that this is not authentic Taoism. A true Taoist is not interested
in profit or gain, does not want to make a name for him/herself but does guard and
show the Way.
